Information
Applications: You can request an application to be mailed to you by filling out and mailing the Application Request Form along with the $50 application fee. You can also pick one up at the JATC office, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Fridays 7:30 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The JATC accepts cash, checks, credit cards or money orders.
There is an Application Information Meeting held at the JATC every third Monday of each month. This meeting starts at 4:00 p.m. (no registration needed). This meeting will go into more about what each program has to offer and what you would be doing for the on the job training portion. It's a great time to learn more about the JATC and to answer questions.
Requirements: Must be 18 years of age, High School graduate or a GED with a minimum score of 250, 2500, or 600 depending on when you took your GED test. In place of a High School diploma a two year associates degree or higher from a school accredited by a State Education Agency.
Inside Wireman: Have a year of High School algebra with a ''C'' or better average, or one quarter post High School algebra with a passing grade, or provide evidence of having completed the NJATC math course with a minimum score of 75% website for this is: https://electricaltrainingalliance.org/Learning/OnlineTechMath Have a valid drivers license. Must have access to internet with a computer/laptop or tablet.
Low Voltage: Have a year of High School algebra with a passing grade, or one quarter post High School algebra with a passing grade, or provide evidence of having completed the NJATC math course with a minimum score of 75%. Have a valid drivers license.
Residential: Have a year of General Math with a passing grade, or provide evidence of having completed the NJATC math course with a minimum score of 75%. Have valid drivers license.
Interviews: Interviews will be scheduled for those who have successfully met all the requirements. Interviews are usually held 3 to 4 times per year.
School: Daytime school for the Inside Wireman program (years 1-4) is 24 days per year for a total of 192 hours. Apprentices go to school 1 day per week, every other week September thru August. Low Voltage (160 hours) and Residential (144 hours) attend night school 1 night a week September through May with Low Voltage attending an occasional Saturday class.
Books, Tuition & Lab Fees: Approximately $1,000 - $1,800 per year.
Dues: Dues are paid directly to the Local Union not the JATC.
Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship is both a career choice and a commitment. Apprenticeship combines classroom studies with on-the-job training under the supervision of a licensed journey level craft person or trade professional. Apprenticeship programs are a proven success. They offer key benefits not normally found in other education and job training programs.
You earn while you learn. Earning a good wage with health care, retirement and other benefits while learning skills in the trade.
Wages increase progressively as your skill level increases both in the classroom and on the job.
